Fernando Jose Torres Sanz was born on March 20, 1984 in Fuenlabrada, a town south of Madrid where no historic streets stand but one peculiarity exists: a disproportionate number of footballers have come out of it. His grandfather supported Atletico; his father did too. He had no real choice. By the age of five, Fernando was already playing for the local children team Parquesur. At seven he moved to Rayo Parquesur, and by eleven an Atletico scout named Manuel Briceno spotted him. Briceno later said: I was looking for a midfielder, I found the future striker of Spain.
Atletico's academy was tougher than the Real Madrid academy by reputation. Those without the mental quality got cut early. Torres passed through without any pause. At fifteen he started training with the first team. At seventeen he made his La Liga debut against Leganes. At nineteen he became captain. The team was in Segunda at the time, Spanish Atletico was at its historic low, and the entire enterprise rested on one person: the blond kid with cheek stripes and a nine on his back.
Seven years in the first Atletico spell meant seven years of loyalty to a club that was not progressing. Torres refused Arsenal, refused Chelsea, refused Milan. He left only in 2007, when it became clear Atletico could not deliver him a major tournament in time. At Liverpool he became what he was meant to be: scored on debut, collected 24 Premier League goals his first season, and had a shirt with El Nino 9 written on it that The Kop sang about for minutes on end.
